The world is working its way towards Net Zero and energy provider Octopus Energy is at the forefront of this endeavour. For the Energy Tech Summit 2023, we created an immersive experience to demonstrate how the combination of smart technology and a flexible energy system can support environmental sustainability, unlocking the potential for people to save money through their energy choices. This experience involved the use of dynamic physical props and an interactive animated scene displayed on Outernet’s expansive wall and ceiling screens within their ‘Now Trending’ space.
The animated story takes visitors through a day-to-night cycle, focusing on a household’s energy consumption across 4 different seasons and locations, highlighting Octopus Energy’s increasingly global presence: spring in the UK, summer in Morocco, autumn in Japan and winter in Switzerland. The narrative effectively highlights the generation, storage, and consumption of energy while showing how variables like weather, time of day, and demand impact all three aspects.
The installation also encourages visitor participation by presenting two scenarios through floor stickers: one for achieving carbon neutrality quickly and another for doing so slowly. When triggered, a rippling effect appears across the screen temporarily ‘freezing’ the standard narrative to begin explaining how the adaptation of smart device control, or lack of, will impact a neighbourhood’s energy consumption, the infrastructure in its environment, and an individual’s energy bills over time.
The animation is very approachable and friendly, brought to life further with the activation of real world props – a truly immersive reusable physical and digital didactic experience for all visitors! We’ll let you know when it will be set up next.
